Grandparent's Graduation Celebration/Summer Plans
Today, was Squeak's day to celebrate her graduation from Kindergarten with my parent's and my husband's parents and grandpa. I had most of Squeak's completed work set out on tables for viewing with a little note about what she completed and what she will continue with. We also had snacks and a cake!

(NOTE: As I list this out, it seems like A LOT - LOL! But Squeak is a very aggressive learner and I always like to have plenty (and a variety) of resources available. Frantic trips to the computer to print out "more" back when we first started home schooling taught me that lesson!)
Next week, we begin our K/1st summer - I'm aiming for 1-2 days a week. I previously listed a few resources that I planned on using. For the summer, we are taking a break from our regular curricula and re-visit some things that Squeak has enjoyed.
-Summer Link Math and Reading - Summer before Grade 3
-Top Readers Nonfiction Reading Comprehension (the book in the link is slightly different as it's "more nonfiction reading"...I couldn't find just the regular book we have)
-Vocabulary for the Gifted Student Grade 2
These are just fun books. I don't plan or expect to finish every page. Squeak can pick and choose what she wants to do, when she wants. The Top Readers book has a variety of topics to read about, so she can just pick whatever. Except for some of the activities in the Summer Link workbook, I don't expect these books to present much challenge....just keeping it easy and breezy still. I probably should have gotten the next level of the Top Readers and Vocabulary books but I was in a hurry at Barnes & Noble (little hands were getting into too much!) Oh well.
So, that's pretty much our "curricula" plan for the summer. Of course, we are hitting the library too. Having plently of free play (our days are very long - early risers) so I have a lot of hours that I need to keep them busy! So we'll see how it goes!

- We will still continue with BJU Bible.
- I chose some materials from Moving Beyond the Page. I used MBTP previously and wasn't impressed since the 5-7 Concept didn't challenge my 3.5 year old. But this time around, I just wanted light, fun, no pressure activities. So I chose the 6-8 Measurement Concept and the 6-8 Matter and Movement Concept. A second reason is that Packy likes to tag along and MBTP will be our "snack/story/project" time. The 6-8 age range uses picture books as the literature and that's exactly what I was looking for. I returned the Teacher's Guides and just kept the Student Activity books and picture books.
- I bought The Complete Book of Our Solar System. I asked Squeak to choose between this and the Complete Book of Animals and she chose the Solar System. So basically, we are just going to gaze into God's beautiful night sky, discuss whatever and work on the activities in the book. Again, nothing new or formal, just for fun.
- I didn't buy a BrainQuest book. Instead I bought a few other workbooks to just use when we need to fill some time:

Changes in Summer Curricula Plans
I decided to do something completely different when we begin our K/1st summer session on June 6th. I want to keep things simple with minimal teaching on my part and more student lead. Squeak will also be involved in a few summer activities outside the home such as summer soccer, recreation and a science-based Youth Program (and it's FREE!!).
I am almost done with ironing out the resources I will make available for Squeak - one package is coming Friday, this is something I chose on the "easier" side so Packy can tag along (meaning I chose a package with picture books verses chapter books). We use this as "snack/story/project" time. Yes, I will announce what I'm using later on.
We will continue with BJU Bible and reading/read alouds. And that's it. We are breaking from Singapore Math and Noeo Science and Sonlight History. Mainly because I don't want to keep plowing through curriculum!
So, the bottom line summer K/1st plan:
-summer soccer
-Science-based Youth Program
-recreation
-BJU Bible
-reading/read alouds
-snack/story/project
-and possibly a Brain Quest Grade 3 workbook, just a pull out book for fun

Two Weeks Left of Kindergarten!
Squeak has two weeks of Kindergarten left! I am very proud of her! This month has been very relaxed since she is so far ahead. I have also made some decisions - we are going to start Singapore 2a in the fall instead of sooner. Mainly because of her young age. And also because I rather have a more relaxed summer and not really have to teach much! LOL! I bought a few resources to keep her busy in addition to Singapore 1b IP and CWP books. I toyed with the idea of enrolling her in EPGY for 3 months but decided not to.
Squeak also turns 5 on Tuesday!!
Our official last day of Kindergarten is May 27th and we will enjoy that day at the ZOO! Then we are going to take a complete week off and begin our K/1st summer school. This is just very minimal - 2 days a week, just to keep the skills going. Bible is the only subject that will be completed daily as usual along with Read Aloud time.
This summer, Squeak is also going to be involved in a Summer Soccer program and summer recreation (she went last summer too). We also have our membership to the Kid's Museum that we've been using (we are slated to head there on Friday with Grandma!!).
So in a nutshell, we are here and doing well and Squeak is such an amazing student!
Oh! We started a small "unit study" on the Food Pyramid this past Friday. It was very impromptu as we just started talking about healthy eating and it lead to the official food pyramid kid's website: http://www.mypyramid.gov/kids/index.html
So, we printed out a food pyramid and hung it up. The girls colored their own FP's and hung them up. And we are tracking Squeak's food intake and daily activity with the worksheet from the site. After four days, we are going to draw a giant FP and list all the foods Squeak ate so she can see what she eats the most of! Very fun!

I went from diligent blogger to MIA! This is going to be a quick one!
Squeak has finished and started many new things including:
BJU Phonics/English 1
Singapore Math 1b IP book and I'm preparing to start 2a after she turns 5
BJU Bible Truths K5
We are still plugging along and loving Noeo Chemistry 1 and Sonlight History (though a little relaxed here). Squek is reading more and more and completed Pizza Hut's BOOK IT program (next fall's sign up begins in May!).
We also took a break Easter week and had fun at the Kid's Museum (I bought a membership) and have been getting outside as much as the weather has allowed! I bought a State Park pass so we can get into the state park without having to pay the fee each time. And I booked us a cabin in the park for the end of June as a family trip!
