Reader Rabbit Math is a HIT!!

Last summer, I saw Reader Rabbit K-1st Math books for clearance price ($2.50) at the teacher store. I bought one without any thought because:
A. I love rabbits
B. Reader Rabbit is really cute!

So I brought it out Tuesday night to do as a "fun" math book and Squeak LOVED IT!! She said she wanted to do the entire book that night! I loved her ambition but gently said no. But it gave me something to think about since we are cruising through Singapore Math K. So here's the plan now:

Singapore Math K should be completed sometime in January and I planned on starting Horizons Math K on February 1st. I'm going to bump the Horizons start date to March 1st instead. This way, Squeak can just work through the Reader Rabbit math book for the remainder of January and through February. A little break from "curriculum" but also good review and she will get some new concepts since it spans to 1st grade. Plus Reader Rabbit is soooo cute that I don't mind looking at him every time Squeak wants to do math!

Though the new books aren't at the same fantastic price I found, here is the workbook:

Our Habitat Project

So we went over the seven habitats and made seven projects for each habitat! Here is the final project:

Desert - cactus, Forest - caterpillar, Rivers/Lakes - cattails, Seashore - octopus, Arctic Tundra - grizzly bear, Wetlands - whooping crane, City - gray squirrel

Weekly Report (12/14- 12/18)

MBTP- We finally completed all the Moving Beyond the Page habitat animals this week! We made a whooping crane for the wetlands and a gray squirrel for the "city" (our only man made habitat!). Next I'm going to gather the poster board and all Squeak's projects together for one picture to post!! To wrap up this section of MBTP, after the Christmas break, we are going to research and make a habitat for this little plastic snail we have. This is part of Lesson 4 of the MBTP teacher's manual. I just really expanded on what they suggested.

Then beginning in January, we will break from MBTP and start our Peter Rabbit lap book!

Math- Squeak is done with calendars for a while! So we completed Unit 18. I plan on revisiting it briefly after we work through Unit 19. We do talk about what day it is and what happened the day before.

Bible- I am searching for this nice children's story Bible I have. I think it's in our bedroom closet now that I type this....

So next week off!!!

Decorating the cookies!

Squeak and I decorated Christmas cookies this morning and she had a blast!

First she was squirting the icing on the cookies:

Then we ate a cookie. (FYI: Squeak is not pale or anything, the flash was just a little too bright!)

Finally the icing went right into her mouth:

We have one more batch to decorate but I need to buy more frosting!!

The Lord sayeth....

In church yesterday, the LORD clearly pressed this verse upon my heart: Exodus 24:7:

"And he took the book of the covenant, and read in the audience of the people: and they said, All that the LORD hath said will we do, and be obedient."

Though it's about Moses reading to the people, it spoke to me about Squeak and what to do in regards to Bible study before we start CLE Bible 1......READ TO HER!! It's as simple as that. Even though I already do read her Bible stories, this is all she needs right now. I think the Lord was just trying to tell me that what I was doing is just fine....read her His Word!!

Weekly Report (12/7 - 12/11)

We had a good week here!

Math- We are working through the Time Unit in Singapore Math. I don't like the way Singapore presents the days of the weeks. I do like the way Horizons does - they line up the days of the week with the ordinal numbers and present them that way. Singapore just presents them without any ordinal numbers. But that is ok, as long as she gets an idea that the days of the week have names and some sort of order then we are fine. So, in conversation, I'm going to mention the day of the week when I think of it and what the next day is - just to get it into conversation and she can see that each day is different.
I figured we will be done with Earlybird K in January then move onto Horizons K on February 1st.

MBTP- This week, we made two animals from our habitats! The octopus from the seashore/sea and a grizzly bear puppet from the Arctic Tundra:

Phonics- Squeak really hasn't used Starfall or Reading Eggs this week so we did two phonics worksheets from the Evan Moor book. She learned that some words end with TWO s's like grass and dress!

Bible- Though nothing "official", we talk about Jesus and pray daily. I think I'm set on CLE Bible 1 for fall too!

Since I'm new to the blogger world, this is my first picture post!! This is the octopus project we did today for our seashore/sea habitat!!

Weekly Report (11/30 - 12/04)

Math - We took last week off and apparently Squeak was "school deprived" because she finished Unit 17 in math in two nights! Sunday and Monday night, she was rock and rolling through math! So for the rest of the week, I let her pick pages out of CTC Math Level A to do. We are about half way done with that book even though we aren't going page by page.

Bible - I found what I want to use for curriculum in the fall. CLE Bible 100. It looks fun with stories and activities to go along with the stories. Right now, we are just reading the Bible and doing some verses. Nothing systematic, just kind of mish-mash right now.

MBTP- We made cattails for our lake/river habitat. We talked about cattails and other things we find in a lake or river. We went to the lake this past summer so Squeak talked about that.

We are going to the science museum today for a field trip....leaving in a few minutes! Not sure if we are going to do any CTC math tonight, I'm hoping Squeak will be tired enough to want to go to bed! Next week, we are starting Unit 18 - Time. That should take us a couple of weeks to get through. I think we will be done with Singapore in January then will move onto Horizons K math as our "official" Kindergarten math. Singapore was considered our "PreK" Math.
